Before diving deep into the importance of Vastu Shastra for your home or workplace, we will first understand what exactly Vastu Shastra is.

Introduction to Vastu Shastra:

When we dig deep into the secrets of nature, it proves to have mysteries that a lot of studies have tried to discover, but the ancient Vedic literature is considered to be the oldest and most powerful record of human thought. Our Vedic Gurus, with their meditation and divine knowledge, were able to find some rare gems. One among those is Vastu Shastra. The principles of Vaastu come from our mighty Vedas ( Stapatya Veda, which is a part of Atharva Veda ). Vastu is a science that hails back to ancient India and deals with the relation of architecture with the celestial expanse.

Origin of Vastu Shastra :

Apart from Vedas, other scriptures like Varaha Puraan, Matsya Puraan, Brahma Puraan, Kalki Puraan, and Skand Puran also have information about Vastu Shastra. Though, like all sciences of ancient India, Vastu Shastra has also evolved because of the change of lifestyle of people over time. But the origin of Vastu Shastra comes from the Sanskrit root word Vas, meaning to live or dwell, whereas Vastu means a house or a residence. In the present context, it includes all buildings like offices, factories, restaurants, hotels, and other workplaces.

Basis of Vastu Shastra :

Five Elements :

As we all know, the whole universe is made of five elements , Vastu Shastra is also based on five elements or ‘tatvas’ that are water element ( jal tatva ) , air element ( Vayu tatva ) , fire element ( Agni tatva) , earth element ( Prithvi tatva ) and space element (Akasha tatva ) .

Directions

Proper segmentation of 16 directions is done with a map of the particular property by a Vastu expert with a Vastu Chakra such that the flow of energy and sun rays according to the Sun’s position throughout the day is balanced. But just to keep it simple, here, let’s talk about the eight basic directions of Vastu Shastra, which are North, South, East, West, Northeast, Southeast,  Southwest, and Northwest, which can be located with the help of a compass, or by the location of Sun. Each of these directions has its attributes, and the construction process should be done in them accordingly. The elements and anti-elements of these directions should also be kept accordingly in these directions.

Vastu Purush Mandala

Vastu Purush Mandala is a cosmic geometrical wonder that has been the foundation for designing temples, forts, houses, factories, and other prominent places according to Vastu Shastra principles for ages upon ages. Vastu Purush is believed to be the deity in Vastu Shastra and is known as the God of construction and structures.

If the principles of the Vastu Purush Mandala are followed properly, the deity (Vastu Purush) is believed to protect the owner of the property from negative energies and maintain a good flow of positive energy, providing a happy, harmonious, and abundance-filled environment for the people residing in the property.

The Vastu Purush Mandala can be explained with the help of a chart, which is a 9*9 grid that is square and contains 81 parts for residential buildings (while it is divided into 64 cells in the case of a temple).

The Vastu is represented lying with his face down, having a head( lighter part ) towards the Northeast and feet( heavier part ) towards the Southwest of a plot of land. Now, the chart or chakra of a plot containing 81 parts has 45 deities( Devtas) governing each part of the chart. It begins with the foundation excavation on an empty plot, and then the 45 deities gradually take their predefined places as the construction of the building moves forward to its completion. This chart or mandala is used to determine the character of a particular area in a plot of land depending upon the nature of the deity governing that part.

Suppose you want to follow the ancient science of Vastu Shastra in the construction of a new building or even if you want to channel the energies of the existing plot or building according to Vastu Shastra. In that case, you need to follow the rules of Vastu Purush Mandala.

But the question arises: why should we blindly follow a science which has its origin dates back to thousands of years? Is it even relevant to the present day, or does it have any scientific basis?

Is Vastu Shastra Scientific?

We know that with continuous evolution and discoveries, science keeps on expanding itself. But there are still a few things that are beyond science, and this fact is even believed by scientists. Most of our ancient Indian sciences are beyond the discoveries of science but are an integral part of the Indian lifestyle and hold immense importance. Vastu Shastra is one such ancient science as well as an art.

But does that mean Vastu Shastra has no relevance to present-day science? No, this is not the case. When it is advised in Vastu Shastra to sleep in the direction with the head lying towards the south and feet towards the North, it is because our body is a magnet with the head as the north pole and feet as the south pole. According to science, we know that opposite poles attract each other, so this is why if we follow the above rule , we get a sound sleep.

We must have heard that most people prefer an east-facing house, that’s because the sun rises from the East and the Sun’s energy is the most positive and full of nutrients in the morning which directly falls into your home if it faces the East direction.

Even during the Mahabharata, Vastu Shastra was widely used. In ancient times, almost all the great kingdoms were constructed based on Vastu Shastra.

There are a lot of other scientific reasons behind what is being told, according to Vastu Shastra, which we will discuss in some other blog.

Conclusion :

Now that we know that the Vastu Shastra is not merely a blind philosophy but has its origin from the principles of magnetic and sun’s energy flow in a building. It explains to us the importance of following Vastu Shastra from the foundation till the full construction and finishing touches of a building.
