You must be aware of the significance of Vastu Shastra for a structure if you are reading this site. Vastu is a science that works in tandem with design to make a place’s inhabitants live their lives more smoothly and without many accidents. It ensures that people living in a house have an environment full of good vibes.

One such contributing factor to the proper Vastu of a house is the placement and condition of the staircase, as per Vastu Shastra.

Staircase, as per Vastu Shastra, plays a very big role in the overall well-being of the residents in a house. It is believed that like a staircase takes a person up and down, it can also take the destiny of the people of the house up and down. It helps you to pass from one floor to another, and connect the energies of two floors, that is why it contains energy fields. Especially when in modern times, there are multi-story buildings, so it becomes very important to look at the condition of the staircase as per Vastu Shastra.

Stairs represent the planet ‘Mercury’ (Buddh) responsible for your career growth and new opportunities. While the right placement of the staircase, as per Vastu, can do wonders for your life, the wrong placement can adversely affect your business growth and career opportunities, your relationship with your family members, and your connections with the outside world. It can even lead to serious health issues like heart attacks and diseases related to your brain.

Let’s see what to avoid and what to do for the placement and design of the staircase as per Vastu Shastra so that it can radiate only positive energies in your house.

Ideal Directions for Placing Staircase as per Vastu Shastra

The staircase, as per Vastu Shastra, is one the heaviest part of all the placements of a building. As per Vastu Shastra, the South and West directions are the zones for heavy placements while the North and East directions should be kept as light as possible. So a staircase, as per Vastu Shastra should be placed in the South, West, or Southwest direction of the house. All the weight of the staircase should be either on the South or West direction walls if you are building it in the direction like the Southeast, or the Northwest.

Unideal Directions for Placing the Staircase as per Vastu Shastra

While the South and West directions are the ideal zones for placing the staircase, the North and East directions are considered unideal for placing the staircase as per Vastu Shastra.

A staircase as per Vastu in the North direction leads to the loss of new opportunities.

A staircase, as per Vastu, in the East direction leads to a loss of social connections and delays in things from the actual time when they need to be done like marriage, etc. If a politician has a staircase in the East direction, chances are highly unlikely for him to win the elections.

There are two directions where a staircase, as per Vastu Shastra is a total no-no. They are:

Northeast Direction:

In the Northeast direction, a staircase as per Vastu Shastra is completely prohibited. As per Vastu Shastra, the head of the Vastu Purush lies in the Northeast direction. As this is a very sensitive point and needs to be kept as light as possible with a lot of open space, a staircase, as per Vastu, should not be placed here. If a staircase is placed here it can cause severe head/mind-related diseases like loss of decision-making capabilities or even worse can happen.

Center of the House (Bhramasthan) :

The center of the house also known as Bhramasthan is the Heart of the Vastu Purush which is again a very delicate organ. A staircase, as per Vastu Shastra in the center of the house can again lead to severe diseases on health and especially heart, like heart attacks.

Vastu Shastra recommends that the staircases should not be in irregular shapes at homes. It is best to have a regular straight staircase (which is a rectangular or square-shaped staircase). While spiral staircases, as per Vastu are good for temples, they should be avoided in homes.

Things to Avoid Placing under a Staircase as per Vastu Shastra

The place below the stairs has energy fields so it’s very important to not keep stuff that can create an energy imbalance in the overall environment of the home.

Some things that should be avoided are:

A Shoe rack :

A lot of people put a shoe rack or shoe boxes in general below the staircase which is a wrong placement below the staircase as per Vastu Shastra. Our shoes are dirty and contain energies of the outside world which can be negative and when you interact with the energies of your home, it creates an energy imbalance.

A Kitchen :

A kitchen is a representation of the fire element as per Vastu. It again has a lot of energy and when it interacts with the energy below the staircase it creates an imbalance in the overall energy environment of the home. Also, according to our Shastras, the kitchen is a sacred place because our food gets cooked here and when we walk above the staircase putting our feet above the kitchen, it’s not actually considered good.

A Pooja Room :

A pooja room is considered the most sacred place in our house and has the most positive vibes of the overall environment of our house. Just like the kitchen, it is not recommended to step on our feet on the staircase which is built above the pooja room because the deities we worship are placed there in the pooja room.

Other objects :

A lot of people use the place under the staircase as the storeroom which is something that should not be done because it is cluttered and sometimes poorly placed with a lot of dirt. So if you are placing a few extra stuffs there, you should keep them clutter-free and clean.

Electronic appliances like inverters should also be avoided because they have an electromagnetic energy field which also disrupts the energy of the place leading to anxiety issues.

Also avoid placing of bed exactly under the staircase, as the staircase is heavy and can cause pressure on your head if you are sleeping directly under it.

Steps in Staircase as per Vastu Shastra

The number of steps in the staircase as per Vastu Shastra should be in odd numbers like 9,11,13,15 and so on depending on your needs. You count the risers and not the treads of the stairs, when we talk about an odd number of stairs.

Mirrors under the Staircase as per Vastu Shastra

As we all know mirrors reflect energies and that’s why their placement holds good importance in Vastu Shastra. The energies hitting the mirror can be reflected in the whole house if they are positive or even negative.

Colours of Staircase as per Vastu Shastra

Very dark or unpeaceful colors should be avoided on the staircase. The use of light and peaceful colors is generally recommended.

Maintenance of the Staircase as per Vastu Shastra

The staircase as per Vastu should be properly maintained without any damage in any of the stairs or handrails. If damage happens by any chance, it should be repaired as soon as possible. It can lead to ill effects on the health or prosperity of the individuals.

The staircase should not be shaking or have a loose railing.

Main Entrance and Staircase Condition as per Vastu Shastra

The staircase, as per Vastu Shastra should never be placed directly in front of the main entrance.
