You must have heard that the correct direction to sleep, as per Vastu, is the South and North direction should be strictly avoided. We will look into the reason why this is so. But before looking for the best direction to sleep, as per Vastu, the question arises: how do we locate the proper directions in our house?

For locating different directions to find out the best sleeping direction as per Vastu, you can simply use a compass and locate it towards the north direction of the house. The direction opposite that will be the south direction, the direction on left hand to that will be the west direction, and the direction on right hand to that will be the east direction, which is the basic knowledge we all must be aware of.
Now, the second way to get an idea of the directions is by observing the movement of the Sun. Sun rises from the East direction. The direction exactly opposite to that is West. If you’re facing toward the east direction, the direction on the right hand is the south direction, and the direction on the left hand is the north direction.
The above are the basic ways to find out the directions in normal cases, but this is commonly observed by Vastu consultants that the most common mistake people make is to wrongly interpret directions based on a compass or the Sun’s movement, because, sometimes your home is a little bit tilted to some degree, which causes the directions to change and as the directions change, the whole Vastu changes. This you know after taking the degree of your house and doing the gridding of your house map, for which you can seek consultation from a Vastu expert.
Now that you know where to find which direction in your house, we will talk about the best sleeping direction as per Vastu.
Best Direction to Sleep as per Vastu
The best sleeping direction as per Vastu, is south, and the north direction should be strictly avoided. This means you should keep your head towards the south direction and your legs towards the north direction. If your bed lies on the east-west axis, you can keep your head towards the east and your legs towards the west. If your home is tilted to some degree (vidisha plots), then you should also avoid keeping your head towards the northeast direction of your home.
But just because the best sleeping direction as per Vastu, is South, should we blindly believe it, or does this fact have a scientific explanation? So even science proves that the best sleeping direction is South and East. Let’s understand how and why this is the case.
Why the South Direction is the Best Direction to Sleep as per Vastu: A Scientific Explanation
The Earth’s poles have magnetism caused by the movement of molten iron present in the core of the Earth. This is the reason the Earth’s poles behave like the poles of a magnet. The human body also possesses magnetic properties such that our head is the north pole (positively charged), and our feet are the south (negatively charged). We know the opposite poles attract each other, and the same or like poles repel each other. So, this is why it is advised to keep your head in the south direction so that the opposite poles attract each other, and you get a sound sleep. Keeping your head in the same direction, that is, north, can lead to repulsion and disturbances in blood pressure, neurological disorders, and sleep deprivation and can harm the heart.
Apart from scientific reasons, our Vedas also tell the north direction to be the direction in which a dead body’s head should be located.
So, if you have disturbed sleep, it will lead to a lot of health problems of course, you won’t be able to work hard and achieve success with all those diseases and bad things happening in your life. That is the reason why the South is considered to be the best sleeping direction as per Vastu.
Best Direction to Sleep as per Vastu in Places of the Southern Hemisphere
The above explanation be talked about was for the places lying in the northern hemisphere, such as India, but for the places lying in the southern hemisphere, like Australia, the North direction becomes South and vice versa, according to Vastu Shastra. So the best sleeping direction as per Vastu, in the southern hemisphere is to keep your head towards North and feet towards South.
Why is the East Direction also Considered the Best Direction to Sleep as per Vastu?
The east direction is considered the second best direction to sleep as per Vastu, because the sun’s rays enter your house in the morning through the east direction, and when you wake up with your head towards the sun, its rays enter your mind and flow throughout your body giving you a lot of nutrients and energy to start your day fresh and to feel cheerful throughout the day.
This is a very good direction for people who are in the field of marketing, for children, or for people who need concentration in the field of work like research field.
Can you Keep your Head towards the West?
If you keep your head towards the west direction, your feet will be in the east direction, and as the sun is considered a deity in the Vastu Shastra, it is not advised to keep your feet towards the Sun, but you can keep your head towards the west if you wake up early in the morning before the sun rises. So, in short, the West direction is a neutral one if not possible in the south or east direction, you can sleep keeping the head in the West also.
For tilted/skewed (vidisha) plots where the main four cardinal directions become corner directions and diagonal bedroom directions are followed, you can prefer your sleeping direction as Southwest or if that is not possible then Southeast.
